OCR A, OCR B, MICR Volume
Distribution type: Commercial
Font distributor: Fonts.com
In 1968, American Typefounders produced OCR-A, one of the first Optical Character Recognition typefaces, to meet the criteria set by the U.S. Bureau of Standards. In 1968 Adrian Frutiger designed its European counterpart OCR-B for Monotype. This font was developed at the request of those sections of the business community which need to process large quantities of numbered forms automatically and wish to use machines rather than people to read and sort them. OCR-B is slightly easier for the human eye to read than OCR-A. The MICR font has a very practical application. MICR numerals, when printed in magnetic inks, can be read by special scanners that recognize the characters from their magnetic fields rather than just their shapes.
